Many people come to Thailand with different expectations. Often with disappointing experiences in their own country in the hope of doing better elsewhere. However, one does take oneself.

An important lesson, which is often forgotten, is that Thailand is no longer a cheap country and a tough country for both the residents and the farang.

The following shot from 2016 gives a glimpse of what can happen. For those who are familiar with Pattaya North in particular, well-known places are discussed, such as the Begegnungs Zentrum of the German Evangelical Church, Soi 13, the market on Sawangfa Rd, but also the Austrian General Consul Rudolf Hofer and Annet Helmer pastoral assistant.

Helmut, 50, takes the big step to emigrate to Thailand with only a limited benefit and a hundred thousand euros in savings. He meets a nice Thai girl and marries her on Koh Samui. However, after 2 years he is hit by a car and breaks both legs. After 2 months he can move around in a wheelchair again and is almost out of money due to hospital costs. And with that, that was the end of the marriage. He has moved house a few times and now pays 70 euros a month in rent and sells homemade maps by computer.

Günther from Bremen always stays in Pattaya for a number of months. He has known Pat for 8 years, who hopes that he will take her to Germany one day. It is not the great love for each other but affection. These people could be seen regularly in the Begegnungs Zentrum.

A hairdresser speaks, who was able to open this business by studying hard. Girls from bars are her customers and can vent to her about encounters with farangs.

Consul Rudolf can also be seen at work at his old address, for example to verify the life certificate of Germans for their annual benefit. But he also becomes involved with people who are in the Bangkok Hospital without insurance. It is remarkable that an estimated 300 to 400 German men are illegally residing in Thailand.

A lot can change in 4 years. From the overcrowded Pattaya beaches to the almost ghostly, empty beaches now in 2020.

Good item, but possibly depressing for people in a similar situation. That's why it's useful to mention contact details of an organization that can provide help in case of mental distress.

The Begegnungs Zentrum of the German Evangelical Church, Soi 13 on Naklua Road is open all week
opened for contacts and conversations, possible redirection.

A typical example of someone, whom you encounter in every nationality, who turns his back on his own homeland, because their supposed paradise suddenly shines much brighter.
A dreamland with an often much younger exotic woman, of whom you think you understand everything, while her way of thinking in the beginning remains a big question mark for most.
Everything suddenly seems much better, and armed with rose-colored glasses, a lot of fantasy or at most suspicion, the homeland where the social security was certainly much better, is suddenly abandoned.
If you try to tell such a person in the beginning that everything can also have a dark side, you are the person who knows nothing in their eyes.
A few savings, a small benefit, and often NO health insurance, because it is actually too expensive for the meager budget, because they did not need a doctor in the home country, leave the country very cheap.
If something suddenly happens as in the above story, they suddenly also lost the sweet wife with the savings, and at most they are still dependent on their small benefit.
Because they used to want every warning untrue, this is called proven stupidity, with them suddenly bad luck.

I think your comment is very short sighted.
It almost sounds like it's all his own fault.
Of course there is a certain blindness in his actions, but I, like many like me, know enough farangs who meet the so-called love of their lives.
And this lady is really different from all those other ladies, it is said.
The mind drops a meter or one had a bad relationship in their home country for years and voila.
One meets a lady here who gives you all the attention in the beginning until…
Fortunately, not all Thai ladies are of the same caliber.
A little empathy won't hurt and I'm not talking about pity, but compassion.
As if we've never been entrenched in anything before, with butter and fish.
It's a sad video that can teach us a lot.
How many farangs are there who have started a (you) company in full conviction and have lost almost literally everything.
And despite all these well-known facts and this video, there are farangs who make this mistake, unfortunately.
Perhaps an organization that Ton shares with us here can offer some solace.
