Nong Khai – Adventure begins at the Mekong River (video)

After arriving in the northern city of Udon Thani, just an hour's flight from Bangkok, you can head north Nong Khai.
Nong Khai, about 55 km from Udon Thani and is the northernmost city of Isan, literally on the border with Laos.
This city is located on the mighty Mekong River, which also crosses China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. The river is 4909 kilometers long and is considered one of the most important rivers in Asia.
There are some interesting Buddhist temples in the Nong Khai area. Well-known is the temple park Sala Kaew Ku (Salaeoku but also called Wat Khaek) with a special sculpture garden, made by a monk.
Nong Khai is not only accessible by road but also by rail. The railway line of the Northeast Route of the State Railway of Thailand ends here.

Nongkhai has a large aquarium with fish from the Mekong. It is located next to the university campus south of the city on the bypass to the bridge to Laos. Closed on Mondays as far as I know. Entrance fee is low.
The blanket 'wat' in the heart of the city is worth seeing, the Wat Phochai between the ring road to the east and Thanon Prajak. Lots of murals.
If you have (moped) bicycles, you can cycle for miles along the river from west to east and back. There you will also find the city promenade with very nice restaurants, especially in the evening.
A gigantic Vietnamese restaurant on the river. A fairly large Vietnamese community lives in Nongkhai, I don't know whether they came here during the Vietnam War or whether they belong to an earlier 'class'.
But you have to experience the restaurant once. Uncompromisingly Vietnamese, as a salad you get a planter that wouldn't look out of place on the windowsill. But what does it matter.
The restaurant seems easy to find through TripAdvisor or so.

And go to Kumpuwapi and there is a large lake you can drive around it I did that with a scooter so beautiful and there is even a very nice resort.
You will be amazed, they are all worth just googling and then figure out which one you want to see. Maybe all of them if you stay long lol.
