A striking study from the Netherlands. Epidemiologists from the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam will soon publish in Neurology the results of a study among over-45s showing a link between a healthy diet and more brains.

The aging process shrinks your brain, and that process has everything to do with the negative mental effects of aging – such as a decrease in memory function and a decrease in the speed at which your brain solves problems. A healthy diet would slow down that process. Healthy means a diet with lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts and fish.

Between 2005 and 2015, the researchers made MRI scans of the brains of 4213 study participants aged 45-97. Because the study participants had told them what they ate, the researchers knew their diet quite precisely. Based on 14 points, they gave the quality of the diet a score between 0 and 14.

Results

The better the diet quality, the greater the brain size. With every point the researchers gave to the quality of the diet, the brain size of the study participants increased a little.

Conclusion

Research leader Meike Vernooij says that the research shows that elderly people who eat healthy also have larger volumes of brain tissue: “People with a larger brain volume have been shown in other studies to have better cognitive skills. Healthy eating can therefore contribute to keeping the thinking skills of the elderly up to par.”

Read: Brains are so beautiful, you wish everyone had them

That's a strong comment that made me laugh. That everyone has them may be known, but whether they are used in the right way is highly doubtful. I'm not always doing well, but I usually strive to do good. I guess that's human too. I wish this had come to my ears 40 years ago, but apparently it's not too late so tonight we'll have spinach with fish and a fruit snack. There is still hope.

I also like to eat fish with spinach.
It is better to eat fruit before meals than after.

I thought it's not so much the amount of brain that matters, but how much you use it 😉

I always wonder in such studies what the focus is in the research.
Is it perhaps also the case that people who think about healthy living and eating use their brains more?
It has also been proven that brain training increases brain quality!

There are also people who have enough brains but hardly use it 🙂

Clearly a case of: The wish is father to the thought. Someone wants it to be that way, so that's what comes out of the research. (This is how most investigations proceed).
With equal right I can say that this is a reversal of cause and effect. You don't get more brains by eating healthy, but people with more brains probably think better about everything, including nutrition, and THAT is why they eat healthier.

Brain content is of no importance. Whales and elephants have a much larger brain size than humans.

It's about the quality. And just like with muscles and bones, you improve them by using them. And of course how you use them afterwards. You can use any part of your body for good or for evil….

According to some experts, we only use 10% of our brain capacity. You better investigate how you can get more out of the subconscious (90%).
