We came across an interesting study that we would like to share with the older readers on Thailandblog. In this recent study, scientists investigated whether it is possible to reverse cognitive decline in the elderly, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early-stage Alzheimer's disease, through lifestyle changes.
This study focused on the effect of a combination of different lifestyle interventions, such as dietary changes, taking supplements, exercise, stress management and social support.
The aim of the study was to discover whether a combination of lifestyle changes can improve cognitive function in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's. The study involved 51 elderly people with an average age of 74 years. They all suffered from mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's. These participants came from various cities in the United States. The participants were divided into two groups: an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group followed a special 20-week program in which they adjusted their diet, took supplements, exercised daily, applied stress management techniques and participated in group meetings.
The intervention
- Diet: Participants followed a low-fat, vegan diet consisting mainly of fruits, vegetables, legumes, soy, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
- Supplements: Daily supplement with a multivitamin/mineral (without iron), fish oil (1.680 mg omega-3 fatty acids), curcumin (800 mg), vitamin C (1.000 mg), vitamin B12 (500 µg), magnesium L-threonate (144 mg), coenzyme Q10 (200 mg), Lion's mane (2.000 mg) and probiotics.
- Movement: They walked for at least 30 minutes every day and did strength training three times a week.
- stress management: Daily meditation, yoga and breathing exercises were performed under guidance.
- Group support: Participants received group support three times a week to improve emotional support and communication skills.
Results
The results showed that the intervention group showed improvements in cognitive function compared to the control group. Although the improvements were sometimes small and not always statistically significant, there was sufficient evidence that some participants in the intervention group actually showed clinically meaningful improvement.
The research suggests that a combination of healthy lifestyle habits, such as a plant-based diet, regular exercise, taking supplements and stress management, may help slow or possibly even improve cognitive decline in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's.
Recommendations for healthy lifestyle
Based on the research, the following recommendations can be made to help prevent or slow cognitive decline:
- Eat healthy: A plant-based diet rich in whole foods and healthy fats can be beneficial.
- Take supplements: Consider taking supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids to make up for deficiencies.
- Exercise regularly: Get plenty of exercise, including both walking and strength training.
- Manage stress: Practice stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga or mindfulness.
- Increase social contact: Social interaction can help keep the brain active and healthy.
- Get good sleep: A good night's sleep is essential for brain health.
- Avoid unhealthy habits: Stop smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
While these recommendations are promising, it is important to remember that more research is still needed to confirm which combination of lifestyle changes is most effective.
