Drink coffee and stay young longer!

Good news for coffee aficionados: coffee keeps you young for longer at a cellular level, according to a major study. Women who drink two to three cups of coffee a day have longer telomeres than women who don't drink coffee. The condition is that you drink the coffee black, so without sugar and milk.

Telomeres are like protective caps on your chromosomes that shorten ('wear out') as you get older. The shorter the telomeres, the shorter the cell's lifespan. Scientists are therefore hunting for means to keep telomeres long and coffee appears to be one. The finding is in line with previous studies showing that coffee protects against age-related diseases.

The coffee study was conducted among 4780 women participating in the Nurses Health Study, which has followed a large group of American nurses since 1976. It looked at the length of the telomeres in a certain type of blood cells (leukocytes). The telomeres of the women who drink two to three cups of coffee a day were longer than the telomeres of women who don't drink coffee.

"Future studies are needed to better understand the influence of coffee on telomeres, revealing new knowledge about how coffee consumption affects health and longevity," the researchers write.
