Holiday doctor app popular with Dutch holidaymakers

The Holiday Doctor app for smartphones appears to be very popular with holidaymakers. This app, introduced last year, allows Dutch tourists abroad to ask nurses and doctors medical questions.

The app, which was made for iPhone and Android, has now been downloaded more than 50.000 times and is attracting a lot of attention again, especially with the holiday season just around the corner. On average, about 75 holidaymakers use the app every day. The app provides answers to a number of frequently asked questions such as:

  • How do I know which vaccinations I need for my holiday destination?
  • Can I just take all my medicines with me abroad?
  • If I get sick while traveling and I need care, what should I do?
  • Which medical papers should I not forget when traveling?
  • Which self-care products are useful to take with you on holiday?

In addition, users can also contact the Holiday Doctor with their own questions. A team of twenty nurses and five general practitioners answer all medical questions seven days a week. This usually concerns simple things such as skin irritations, diarrhoea, sunstroke, jellyfish stings and earaches.

Holidaymakers can also send photos with their questions. In the first instance, the questions end up with the nurses, difficult cases are passed on to the doctors. Questions will be answered within an hour.

The Vakantiedokterapp is an initiative of health insurer Zilveren Kruis, but anyone can use the free app. So even if you are not insured with Zilveren Kruis.

    On iOS 8.3 (iPhone 5) I was able to install the app, on Android 4.2.1 (Asus TF 300TG) I got the message: "Your device is not compatible with this version."
