Fly if you are obese
Being very obese is no fun. Not everyone can do something about this, for example due to genetic causes or use of medication. It is all the more difficult to have to take a seat in an ordinary Economy Class seat in an airplane. Aircraft seats are simply not designed for this type of passenger.
Of course someone who is corpulent has the choice to fly Business Class with the advantage of somewhat wider seats. However, given the high costs, that is not an option for everyone. But what then?
Airlines advise in such a case that the passenger purchases a second seat. This is to be able to travel more pleasantly yourself, but also not to inconvenience other travelers too much. Everyone has basically paid for an entire chair. If someone else (unintentionally) eats 30-40% of that, that is not fair and certainly not very pleasant on long flights, for example to Bangkok
A second chair is therefore not such a crazy alternative. Not many airlines have special conditions for overweight passengers. KLM and Air France, on the other hand, do and they offer an extra seat on all their flights. To keep it accessible, they also give a discount on these places. However, there are some conditions that apply to KLM/Air France:
- The second chair is on sale with a 25% discount.
- Airport taxes and fuel surcharges do not have to be paid for this seat.
- The passenger is not entitled to more hand or hold luggage.
- The passenger earns Flying Blue miles only once.
- The extra seat must be requested directly when booking (by telephone).
- If there are still free seats on the plane, the passenger can request a refund.
The costs depend on the time of booking. If you book on time, you can save a lot of extra costs. Because you only have to pay the bare ticket price with a 25% discount. You only have to pay taxes and surcharges once, so the final total price for two chairs can be very good. To popular intercontinental destinations, the surcharge will be approximately €150 – €250 in low season, up to around €600 in high season. In many cases, therefore, there need not be an excuse to voluntarily opt for an extra seat.

A few weeks ago I found out that at Etihad it is not mandatory to recline the seatback during meals in economy, only during takeoff and landing. That is very annoying. If you don't want to feel trapped, you can put your own backrest back, but then you have even less space at the folding table because your seat slides forward.
I also think that a solution must be found because it is indeed the case that more and more people are getting fat that are a burden to others.
An important part of the operating costs is the weight of the aircraft plus the cargo and the passengers. So it would make much more sense for a passenger's weight to be taken into account and his/her weight to be part of the ticket price. So the overweight pay more and the little ones less. So a base price for the fixed costs and a surcharge for the weight. Surely that's fairer?
For low-cost airlines, this matters even more.
A fair solution would be the following.
you buy a ticket, are entitled to a seat, hand luggage and check in luggage.
conditions apply to that hand and check in baggage, maximum weight,
so it should also be on the weight of a person. Eg average basic weight according to size, whoever fills himself up and eats and is too lazy to do anything about his body should pay for it.
If one weighs 79 kg the other weighs 120 kg they pay the same price, can take the same hand and check in baggage for that price, but if the one weighing 79 kg has 3 kg more in check baggage, he has to pay extra, while the person who weighs 120 kg dragging an extra 41 kg and not having to pay a euro extra!
So honestly the heavier you weigh the more you pay, period!
This will be difficult to implement in practice.
This means that each passenger also has to pay at check-in.
And then you can immediately abolish that automatic check-in.
This should therefore only be done in taxis. on buses and trains. Gosh what a nice society it is becoming. Me, myself and I with Big Brother as an all-seeing eye. Brrrr, creepy and disgusting vision of the future. Where did it go wrong?
A better idea is to convert the 3 seats next to each other into 2 one and a half seats, which can then be booked with an extra surcharge. Problem solved and no hassle!
Specify the weight when buying a ticket and then point it out
can be checked and that the insufficiently declared kilos will still be paid
must be paid, but then these kilos, for example, must be paid twice.
What a great tip!
I have a shattered knee due to a bad accident, and have (with the help of the insurance) flown business class to Thailand for the last few years. A 2nd seat at a reduced rate is certainly an interesting alternative – as long as my leg can go up!
Actually, this should be a mandatory question when applying for a ticket, so that this problem can be overcome in advance.
I myself am 190 with normal weight (94 kg) but on the last flight I also sat next to a person with a reasonable overweight, I can tell you this is no fun on a flight from Bangkok to Amsterdam.
Question, can you then demand that this person sits somewhere else, or that KLM does something about this before the plane departs?
Another tip: apply it regularly!
Table never goes (all the way) down to flat.
TIP: Drop it down as far as it fits and is comfortable.
Ask for a cushion: Place it on the slanted table.
Then you have a great flat surface to put your leaves with food on.
That works fine for me!
Due to the automation at check-in, ground staff can no longer make adjustments if they have tall or sturdy customers on a flight. What if you are 2 meters it is not always easy. Now the 'problem' lies with the cabin crew. Companies that still have physical customer contact are more likely to make adjustments. Plane not full then blocking the seat next to the 'problem case' was actually an easy method. Or in the extreme case converting someone to the business class. And that can also be the neighbor who is a good customer so that some space is created. By introducing narrower seats on, for example, the 777 and paying for certain better seats with quite a few airlines, the problem has actually increased. On the other hand, with these options, someone who has self-knowledge can also exploit these options.
It is becoming more difficult for all of us to accept something from someone else, sentences from someone who eats himself up and does nothing about his body has to pay for it himself, we think it's normal. I happen to be on the heavy side myself and when the doctor told me that told me before I got my first chemotherapy that I could gain quite a bit of weight from that chemo so I should have immediately said let me die because if I'm fat then other people will suffer from me??
Once had a flight from Bangkok to Amsterdam next to a Thai beauty who had just indulged herself in a decent portion of Som Tam with an enormous amount of pa la in it, what should you do? from away.
Should the children only stay behind in Thailand because Mama wants to go to the Netherlands and some children can cry for a long time on the plane?
There was a woman on an airplane next to a pretty black negro and she asked the stewards if there was anything to be done about it, after a few minutes the stewardess came with the announcement that there was a place in first class. The woman of course immediately got on, after which the stewardess said::sir You can go to first class because madam doesn't like to sit next to a black man.
Doesn't every childless couple contribute to the people who insist on having 5 children ??
You can go on like this for hours but the loyalty to the fellow man is hard to find and these things are getting worse with our I know the rest of the chances mentality.
Happy Songkran to all!
80% of people settle and accept a small deviation from the norm.
And since everyone pays for his place and is also entitled to this, he also has the right to complain about this if he is shortchanged.
So if you already know that you are going to use much more that is not yours or that you have not paid for, then you can of course expect reactions to this, and that has nothing to do with whether you eat a lot and are therefore overweight or have a disease. If you know you are going to cause a problem, you will have to contact the carrier yourself before you book or board and try to resolve this, this has nothing to do with discrimination.
It is antisocial not to undertake and to think it is not my problem and others will solve it.
When booking a flight, standard passport and credit card details are entered. As far as I'm concerned, there will be an EU DigiD with data such as height versus weight. Not to be fooled by this. People are never just fat, they are also wide. It is not wrong to calculate a weight surcharge, as also applies to premiums and health bonuses. The healthier life, the less stressful. Fat people should be encouraged to follow the VDH diet. Adriaan van Dis once called it at DWDD: “Vreet De Helft”.
So it comes down to the fact that in some time we will send ourselves from A to B like a postal package.
Dimensions on the scale, a stamp on our forehead, all in a separate box so that we don't bother anyone, not to mention trace and track.
Ladies and Gentlemen ::Welcome aboard and we wish you all a pleasant flight.
