Global demand for air travel increased by 2016 percent in 6
Global demand for air travel increased by 6 percent last year. This was announced by the aviation organization IATA on Thursday.
Growth was well above the average of 5,5 percent over the past ten years. The supply from airlines increased slightly less than demand, so that on average aircraft were slightly better filled. The average occupancy rate thus reached a record level of 80,5 percent.
December in particular did very well. Demand was 8,8 percent higher than a year earlier, supply 6,6 percent. The strongest growth occurred in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
According to IATA CEO Alexandre de Juniac, 2016 was a good year for aviation. More than 700 new routes were added, the average round-trip ticket price fell by $44 and a record 3,7 billion passengers flew safely to their destination.
