Turkish Airlines recently took a major step in their fleet expansion with the purchase of 220 new Airbus aircraft.

This impressive purchase includes 150 of the A321neo model and a mix of 70 A350s, with the A350s divided into several sub-types: 50 A350-900s, 15 A350-1000s and 5 A350 Freighters. This is in addition to two previous, smaller purchases of A350-900s that the airline made this year.

This purchase fits within Turkish Airlines' ambitious strategy to double its size over the next ten years. The new aircraft will operate mainly from their home base, the major Istanbul Airport, which is seen as a crucial hub between Europe, Asia (including Thailand) and Africa.

In addition to the expansion of the fleet, there is also an emphasis on sustainability. The new Airbus aircraft are more economical, which contributes to the airline's sustainability goals. With this new order, Turkish Airlines has, including previous orders, almost 300 new Airbuses and a number of new Boeings in the queue, some of which are obtained through leasing companies.

Turkish Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, has also expanded connectivity between Schiphol and Istanbul Airport, currently operating five flights per day, mainly operated with widebody aircraft.
