Over the next three years, Schiphol will increase airport charges by a total of 37 percent, making tickets more expensive for travelers.

Airlines will pay an average of 2027 euros extra per departing passenger to the airport from 15. According to Schiphol, this measure is a result of high inflation and increased interest costs. In order to moderate the increase in costs somewhat, Schiphol itself is contributing 100 million euros, a voluntary contribution that helps to determine the rates for the coming three years.

Investment plan and rising costs

The port charges cover personnel costs, security and maintenance, among other things. Schiphol is not allowed to make a profit and only charges the actual costs. Earlier this year, CEO Pieter van Oord announced an investment of six billion euros to tackle overdue maintenance, including improvements in baggage handling to optimize working conditions. These investments are also passed on to the airlines.

Reactions from the aviation industry

Airlines are critical of the increase. Industry association Barin calls Schiphol “one of the most expensive airports in Europe” and is considering appealing to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Three years ago, an earlier increase in airport charges of 40 percent was already passed on to airlines due to the corona crisis. At the time, the court ruled that Schiphol acted correctly, despite protests from the aviation sector.

The increase in port charges is expected to have a noticeable impact on ticket prices, a move that will hit both airlines and travelers in their wallets.

Why is an international airport like Schiphol in need of maintenance delayed?
Top salaries/bonuses for top management, the sky is the limit.
Optimizing working conditions? Is that a cover-up for bad working conditions?
For example, night transport for late workers who stop working when public transport has already stopped?

Why drive 3 hours by car or take the train to Schiphol Airport if you can be at the airport in Brussels or Düsseldorf within an hour???

In addition, flights to and from Schiphol are also much more expensive.

Those times are really exaggerated. I live in South Limburg and a train journey to Schiphol takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes and by car 2.15. But the fact is that the travel times to Düsseldorf and Brussels are a lot shorter.

Then Schiphol should also add that they have made a huge blunder with the construction of that megalomaniac new A-pier!
Likely costs 1.4 billion instead of 600 million!
And who is going to pay that difference?
    Correct……

Keep making everything even more expensive, now there's even more reason to fly from a German or Belgian airport.
With the green surcharges they destroy more than we would like.

I understand from the TV news that the increase will mainly be applied to airlines that fly with outdated (read: noise-polluting) aircraft, which will particularly affect cargo flights.
