Sometime last year I responded to a call from a Dutch lady who had a small problem. She and her husband – both retired – lived in Jomtien and had brought in a lot of clothing, household goods and other items from the Netherlands.

At one point they bought a new condomium, which was to be completed 6 months later. They canceled the rent on their current home and decided to travel to the Netherlands to await their new home.

So the question was whether they could store a few large boxes and plastic “coffins” at someone's home for that long. Well, I have a big house and their belongings in one of the vacant bedrooms wouldn't get in my way. I agreed and that lady would contact me again later.

That contact never happened again, why I don't know. There was apparently a change in plan or another hitch or she found a better solution.

She may have used a “self storage” facility. If you drive from Pattaya to Jomtien, you will see a large building halfway to the left with large letters announcing “Pattaya Self Storage”. I went looking for what a self storage entails.

self storage

A self-storage company offers you storage space that you can rent in any desired size. Mopeds, bicycles, luggage, household goods, office supplies, you name it and it can be stored in a dry and insect-free environment. Usually there is 24 hour security by CCTV and you can go there 7 days a week to get something out of it or add to it. Some companies will even collect your items from you and package them if desired.

When I searched a little further, I discovered that there are a lot of “self storage” companies in Thailand. I have listed some for you in different places. Visit the website of the firm near you to learn about that firm's facilities and other details.

It only costs 14000 bath/month for 20 m3, you can rent a house for it and fill it up.
You may have even more space.
