This morning's Thaivisa news roundup announced an interview with the ambassador of Germany, which was published on the website of Expat Life in Thailand. Quite nice of course, but we are of course more interested when it comes to the ambassadors of our own Netherlands and Belgium.

I went looking on the website of the very readable Expat Life in Thailand and was served at my beck and call. Both Phillip Kridelka as a Keith Rade both have already had their turn as ambassadors for Belgium resp. Netherlands for an interview. Due to copyright and the length of the stories I have not translated the text, but you can read the English articles of these interviews at the links below.

Good stories from a Swedish journalist, stationed in Bangkok, not much news if you have read my previous interviews with these ambassadors on this blog, but fun to read!

Ambassador Kridelka pictured next to the bust of Gustavus Rolin-Jaequemyns. The photo appropriately exudes historical symbolism. No doubt no coincidence. Craftsmanship!

Just a recommendation that ties in with this article.
On Monday evening, the Belgian channel 4 shows the embassy programme, which gives a clear view of the work of the Belgian embassy in the USA, Brasil, Kenya and Bangkok.
It must be said that there is a stark contrast with the approach of their compatriots towards the working method of the Dutch embassy.
Belgium, cozy, almost familial and the Netherlands rather distant, partly due to the lack of Dutch-speaking counter employees. Perhaps the embassies will work together in the future and we can also be addressed in our mother tongue.

In the TV program, the employees and the ambassador are indeed bilingual, sorry trilingual because they also speak English of course.

And the 3rd language of Belgium? German !

Mr. Kridelka, Belgian ambassador in Bangkok is well multilingual. He also masters Dutch, even with a Flemish accent. To further fuel Dylan's prejudices. The man is Walloon, even from Liège. But it is contemporary, 21st century. Not 19th century and not narrow-minded by prejudice.
I was pleasantly surprised by his “non-conformity”. I had expected a senior top diplomat to be “stiffer” formalistically. In that TV program he seems surprisingly accessible and clearly involved with us Belgians in Thailand.
