It has become more expensive for expats to live in Bangkok, according to the ECA International ranking.

The Thai capital is now 147th on the list of the most expensive global destinations in 2013 for expatriates. Last year, Bangkok was still ranked 162.

The research is published by ECA International (www.eca-international.com) a company that provides services for companies and expats, looking at the cost of living for expats. To this end, the costs are measured for 414 items such as food, drink, goods and services, clothing, utilities, etc. Expenditure on housing, education and the purchase of a car are not included.

Tokyo is no longer the most expensive

For the first time in three years, not Tokyo is the most expensive location in the world for expats, but Oslo in Norway. The significant depreciation of the yen against other major currencies in recent months is the main reason for this decline.

The cheapest cities for expats in Asia are New Delhi (200) followed by Mumbai (215) and Karachi (256).

Bangkok (147) is still cheaper than Jakarta (127), but more expensive than Yangon (176) and Kuala Lumpur (182).

    indeed yum,
    what you say is correct, I don't live in Bkk, in Ayutthaya, and here too the prices are going up.
    The fact that the euro has risen is good news.
    But when I hear the news from Belgium, things are no better there, everything is rising there too.
    But I can certainly live cheaper here than over there, except health care.

    It is true that Bangkok has become more expensive. Thailand also has a high annual inflation and then prices have to adjust over time.

    How can you be in Thailand longer for a reasonable amount: Moving to Chiang Mai. There is also something to experience for foreigners. It's even cheaper there. {housing}

    Bangkok? Only if I have to be at the embassy! And otherwise you can always go to Mumbai, New Delhi or Karachi. That really makes you happy........

    No, don't whine. Just stay in Thailand and preferably a little further north. Because besides the fact that BKK is becoming more expensive, it also has 2 disadvantages:

    1. it slowly disappears into the sea and
    2. It's getting harder and harder to get to, let alone get around town.

    By the way, I'm waiting for the rainy season again with interest! Will probably end up in another “advantage” of BKK.
