The Quiz 2020 of the Dutch Association Thailand in Pattaya
Last Thursday, a fun meeting took place in the Tulip House in Jomtien to play the Quiz 2020. There were 26 participants in the Quiz who, as 13 pairs, were presented with 2 rounds of 31 questions each.
The Quizmaster Gert Jan van de Heide had put together a tough quiz of 62 questions on a range of topics, which had to be answered with a "multiple choice" system. After the ceremony was the prize giving. The first prize went to Dick and Kees, the second prize to Maryse and Peter and the third prize to Jos and Matthieu
Dick Koger
The Dick of the winning couple Dick and Kees turned out to be our blog writer Dick Koger. He was asked by Kees Bot, an old bridge friend of his, to participate. So I asked Dick about his experience of this brain and memory torture. Dick says:
“But then a phone call comes from an old bridge friend, Kees Bot. Whether I feel like participating as a couple. Say yes without thinking, how nice. Later I think we do make a good pair. He knows everything about music, I'm well-read. He knows a lot about history, I follow television. Sport is probably our weak point.
“There are 26 participants and that is a good turnout. Apparently more people crave entertainment and contact. The quiz consists of two rounds of 31 multiple choice questions. When we see the assignments, we have a hard head. History questions, which I know nothing about. River names I've never heard of. Fortunately, we realize that we will not be the only ones who find it difficult.
Who knows that the color of beaver teeth is gray, light blue, blue or orange. I know, because I've seen Freek Vonk. Orange. Because of this I also know that silverfish are not fish, but insects. Kees knows everything about operas and deaf composers. Still, I think we don't have at least ten answers. The second round seems even more difficult to us. The nicest question, which we didn't know the answer to, was a series. JFMAMJJASON. The question is which letter should follow and we have a choice of ABCDE. If you know it's easy.
The third prize is awarded to a couple who had 23 errors. The second prize for people with 21 errors. The first prize is ours. We appear to have nine errors in the first round and eight in the second round. That's great. We get a festive package, in which an orange T-shirt stands out in particular with a black inscription: the smartest person in Pattaya.”
Solve the quiz at home
For people who could not attend the meeting in Tulip House, the possibility was created to solve the Quiz at home. No official participation, of course, because the questions were only sent a day later, with 2 hours to return the solution.
I took advantage of this opportunity, because I was especially curious about the nature of the questions. Well, that wasn't wrong. Anyway, I bravely started answering and that went well in the beginning. After a while I started to doubt, was the solution now letter a or c, or maybe b? I could no longer resist the temptation, after all, there was no control to get the correct answer confirmed via the internet. That was of course not the intention and I therefore did not submit my solutions.

Perhaps you are interested in playing the quiz in your own circle (club or company). In that case, please contact Annalies Lutjen at [email protected] or with the Quizmaster Gert Jan van der Heide via [email protected]

Bert Gringhuis (1945), born and raised in Almelo in the beautiful Twente. Later lived for many years in Amsterdam and Alkmaar, working in export for various companies. I first came to Thailand in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the country. Been back many times since then and moved to Thailand after my (early) retirement as a widower. I have been living there for 22 years now with my somewhat younger Thai lady Poopae.
My first experiences in Thailand as a kind of newsletter sent to family, friends and acquaintances, which later appeared under the name Gringo on Thailandblog. Many, many articles followed those first stories and that has grown into an almost daily hobby.
In the Netherlands still an avid footballer and football referee, but the years are starting to tell and in Thailand still avid, but the pool billiards is really of inferior quality, ha ha!
