Expats as tourists in their own country, Thailand!
The Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) aims to increase domestic tourism of expats living in Thailand. An attempt to do so is the organization of the Expat Travel Fair on 1 and 2 October in Bangkok.

As far as I am concerned, it would indeed be good to go out again in this country, where I have been living for about 14 years now. Oh, I've seen a lot already! Of course I have been to Isaan several times, not only in the village where my wife comes from, but also other nice areas in that region. I also know Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Samed quite well. For Phuket, however, I was there before the tsunami, a lot has changed since then, but I don't know that (yet). Kanchanaburi, Chantaburi and Saraburi and their surroundings are also all familiar territory to me. Also made beautiful tours with friends through the Isaan and from there to Fang north of Chiang Mai.
Gained quite a lot of knowledge of the country and made beautiful trips, but there is also enough room for other destinations, where I have not been yet. The problem is that our son is at school and so the opportunity to make a tourist tour is rather limited. In addition, I've seen enough temples, beaches don't really interest me, just as groups of immigrant women who cobble together all kinds of "authentic" souvenirs. The mountains then? Well, as beautiful as the views of certain mountains may be, it doesn't really impress me anymore.
Let's think about it, Phuket is at the top of the list, Hua Hin/Cha Am maybe, Nonkhai also seems a bit like Mae Hong Son. Not to mention smaller areas such as Amnat Charoen, Trad or a trip to Koh Lanta or something.
Well, we'll see and I'll let you know when we've been anywhere.
What was your last travel destination outside your place of residence in Thailand and is there already a new trip planned?

Bert Gringhuis (1945), born and raised in Almelo in the beautiful Twente. Later lived for many years in Amsterdam and Alkmaar, working in export for various companies. I first came to Thailand in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the country. Been back many times since then and moved to Thailand after my (early) retirement as a widower. I have been living there for 22 years now with my somewhat younger Thai lady Poopae.
My first experiences in Thailand as a kind of newsletter sent to family, friends and acquaintances, which later appeared under the name Gringo on Thailandblog. Many, many articles followed those first stories and that has grown into an almost daily hobby.
In the Netherlands still an avid footballer and football referee, but the years are starting to tell and in Thailand still avid, but the pool billiards is really of inferior quality, ha ha!

Thailand, living there with a retirement Visa, already traveled a lot by own car, to all corners, except that it was Phuket south to Malaysia.
Recently with a Thai group of friends to Baan Cook Phlai. There brought a jointly bought Buddha to 2 monks, who have been living in a large valley for 1 year and established a temple there. Not much more than a hut with some corrugated iron, via a narrow sand path full of holes used as a dike between the rice fields, accessible with a car and a strong stomach, when it rains you absolutely cannot go there with a car. Fortunately, we had already left when a huge thunderstorm with downpours broke loose.
The program now includes a trip with NL/Thai boyfriend/girlfriend from Rayong again to Chiang Mai, Pai and Mae Hong Son and the surrounding area, to explore the area along the back roads a bit more, we look forward to it.
Wish everyone a good journey.
