The Passport Desk at Schiphol celebrated its 5th anniversary last week. In those years, more than 38.000 passports and identity cards were issued to Dutch citizens from all over the world. This makes the Schiphol Desk the most visited 'border municipality' in the Netherlands.

Dutch nationals living abroad can apply for a passport or identity card at Dutch embassies and some consulates-general. In addition, since 2013, they can also contact the Schiphol desk.

The Passport Desk at Schiphol is a so-called 'border municipality', a municipal counter where Dutch nationals living abroad can apply for and collect a (business) passport and/or identity card.

More than 38.000 passports and ID cards

Since the issue of the first Dutch passport in 2013, more than 38.000 passports and identity cards have been issued to Dutch expats via the Schiphol desk. So do you live in Thailand and do you want to apply for a new passport and/or identity card? Then you can make an appointment at the municipal desk at Schiphol for your next visit to the Netherlands.

After closing many consulates, opening the passport desk was a very positive action for Dutch people living abroad. After you have made an appointment and the application has been processed at the municipal desk at Schiphol, you can pick it up after about 3 working days. You can also apply for an identity card or Digid there, but take a good look at the website to see what you need for the application.

Coincidentally read about this today in either VK or Telegraaf (ombudsman section), where a site was mentioned (unfortunately not to hand here - can someone look this up?) where it is reported exactly WHICH papers you should take with you and where you can go with WHAT waiting time, if you want/have to apply for a new pass as an expat in NL). Going back to retrieve a missing birth certificate or something like that will not be an option for most people in that situation.

It says that when you collect the passport, your old one will be handed in. It is important for those with a Thai residence permit or visa that they must be able to show this in Thailand. So like the embassy returns the old one with holes in it, thus invalidated. And civil servants are civil servants and if you read strictly you will lose your old passport at Schiphol. And I also read nothing about a document that you can get at the embassy with the text that the old one has been replaced by a new one, as sometimes requested by an Immigration office.
