Small joke that happened to me about 25 years ago on New Year's Eve.
In the morning at breakfast at the hotel, a serving lady asked me, "you go Kau dau", at least that's how I understood it.555
I repeated it questioningly, "Kau dau" never heard of it, where she looked at me even more incredulously and even asked a colleague for assistance who pronounced it exactly that way.
You Angrit (Englishman) and you do not know Kau dau???? she asked almost in despair.
After at least 10 minutes and an increasingly strange-looking service, I came, because the current day was December 31st. It only became clear after breakfast that she perhaps meant countdown.
Ooh, I said, you mean countdown, YES NOW YOU KNOW, she was relieved, and now also told her other colleague that I now finally knew what Kau dau meant, which I think she will still pronounce it exactly the same way 25 years later.555
I once had the same idea, but with a Dutchman.
He asked me why I was in despair? I looked at him suspiciously and asked him what he meant by desperate.
The hotel manager intervened and managed to solve the riddle. The doubt had disappeared 😉
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Yes, Piet, that's what happens when, apart from speaking Dutch, you usually write in German.
In German it is vertwijfeld, verzweifelt.
If you had just asked me, you wouldn't have had to bother that Hotel Director.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
