Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand about 400 kilometers from Bangkok. The island is part of the Koh Samui archipelago, which includes about 40 islands and seven of which are inhabited.

Fly or ferry

You can go to Koh Samui with a direct flight to the island's airport. There are also plenty of alternatives to flying, such as driving to the east coast of Surat Thani by bus, train or car and hopping on the ferry there. The ferries to Samui leave every hour, the distance to the island is about 35 km.

Rent a car or motorbike

Nothing beats the freedom of having your own means of transport. Rent a car and discover the hidden landscapes of Koh Samui. The price for renting a car varies from 1.000 to 2.500 Baht per day. You can of course also rent a motorbike for less money, which is possible from 250 baht per day. Remember that you must have an international driving license (available from the ANWB) otherwise you will be in violation. You usually need to present a credit card to rent a car.

Taxis and Songthaews on Koh Samui

Taxis on Koh Samui are quite pricey, according to some even the most expensive in Thailand. They don't use a meter and you have to agree a price with the taxi driver in advance. A cheaper alternative are the many Songthaews, which act as local buses and cost between 20 and 60 baht.
