Koh Samui is Thailand's most popular holiday island and especially Chaweng & Lamai are busy beaches. For more peace and quiet, go to Bophut or Maenam Beach.

Koh Samui has a beautiful nature, exotic snow-white beaches and a warm clear sea. Most hotels can be found on the east and north coast. but take a trip to the interior and the other beaches for beautiful nature, waterfalls and deserted beaches. A visit to the Big Buddha on Koh Faan is also recommended. Another highlight is the beautiful Angthong National Marine Park.

Until the first backpackers arrived in the 70s, the island was known as the largest coconut plantation in the world. However, tourism is now the main source of income. Nathon is the capital of Koh Samui. From here the ferry goes to the mainland, to Surat Thani. The main road that goes around the island also passes through this town.

There are several flights a day from Bangkok to Koh Samui. You fly with Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways. There is also a daily flight from Phuket and Pattaya. You can also travel by train. You can take the night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. From here there is a ferry to Koh Samui. Another alternative is the bus. You can take the bus to Don Sak from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal in Thonburi. This is a harbor 50 km east of Surat Thani, from where ferries, speedboats, and car ferries sail to Koh Samui. You can sail from Koh Samui to the smaller islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.
