Yesterday 'the Best Thai 2017' campaign, powered by Singha Beer, started. Thai restaurants in the Netherlands and Belgium compete for the title of 'the best Thai restaurant in the Netherlands or Belgium'.

Restaurant visitors can vote for their favorite Thai restaurant via the special websites www.thebestthai.nl and www.thebestthai.be. First of all, the restaurant owners will compete for the vote of the public, but with the most votes you are not immediately the Best Thai 2017.

Gault&Millau inspectors will visit the five restaurants with the most votes in January 2018. The inspectors of Gault & Millau assess the restaurants on the authenticity, smell, taste, tension and mouth experience of the various Thai dishes and the quality of service, atmosphere and hygiene of the restaurants.

Following the success of the Best Thai 2016, with more than 250 participating Thai restaurants in the Netherlands, the Best Thai will also be organized in Belgium this year. In both countries you can vote from 3 November to 31 December. Each participant in each country has the chance to win a trip to Thailand for two people. The winners of this trip will be announced in January 2018 via Facebook and Instagram of Singha Beer Benelux.

The winning restaurant of the Best Thai Netherlands as well as the winner of the Best Thai Belgium will be announced on Friday 9 February 2018 at the fair 'Asia in Antwerp'.

For more information go to www.thebesthai.nl or visit The Best Thai stand on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 November at the trade fair Gastronomy/Fine Food Professional in Utrecht.

About 10 years ago it was my hobby to eat at a Thai restaurant 2 or 3 times a month, but always a different one. This way we saw something of the Netherlands and the (usually) Sunday was rewarded. Fixed recipe Tom Ka or Yam, Yam Nuea, and Pad Thai. In any case, I have seen them all in Amsterdam and the surrounding area, but also around 150 outside of it. I kept a blog about it, but unfortunately that food platform no longer exists. What I have remembered is that naming 1 favorite is impossible. There is a lot of variety on offer and there seem to be no fixed rules about the use of herbs in particular. It just depends on where the person behind the stove comes from and how they ever learned to cook. However, I have often come across that most Thai outside, for example, Chinatown in Amsterdam cook much too Dutch (toned down). There are also many Chinese who pretend to be Thai and that is absolutely detrimental to taste, this should not be sold that way. Bird as in the picture is certainly not wrong and probably also the most famous, but often unfeasibly busy, queues to the outside. The snack bar opposite is a real hype among tourists. There are more sophisticated choices. In general, I have always eaten good to very good at Dutch Thai, if asked about authentic spicy preparation. I even dare to say that, for example, the average steak salad in the Netherlands is better than in most parts of Thailand, probably because of the type of cow and the cutting method. One thing is certain: Thai food is and remains uniquely delicious!

Just like last year, the website is completely correct, wrong names at wrong restaurants, wrong interior photos at various restaurants and the best are missing from the site. Last year there was also a lot of messing around with false voices. Too bad it's not being taken more seriously.
And last year's top three was also a total mockery. Hopefully everything will be reviewed.

I agree with that. The organization is amateurish to say the least.
We ourselves became 4th last year. This year we have been invited to participate again, but will certainly not do so. There will be anonymous visitors to the best 5 restaurants, which is good in January. We are always closed to Thailand in January and have indicated this. Their proposal was……..to open for a week in January so that they could come by anonymously????I just said it was a nice idea and that we would travel back with all the staff………for a week.
I also kindly asked if the staff at Singha had already started drinking in the morning……..
