Fishmonger Pim Hoonhout has picked up his old work/hobby again. The sale of herring in Hua Hin will soon start at Say Cheese, Thailandblog reported on April 24. What is the state of affairs? Here is his account.

Started insulating the outside wall early in the morning. While shopping, the phone rang that there is still one form missing from the Netherlands to be allowed to import the herring, so we quickly went home to arrange that. I forget to buy half.

Once home, the Netherlands appears to be still asleep, so we started on that wall. Just when it is not possible for a while, the Netherlands is awake. Fortunately, the requested papers are on time at the airport.

In the meantime, the company has called that my self-designed herring cutting box will be ready on time. Now I'm used to a lot of people thinking about something here when it's too late. In this case there was no cutting board even though it was in the picture. Then you see that man think: you do have that container where you can throw that fish.

After explaining for more than an hour that you need that cutting board, he promises that it will arrive tomorrow. Know for sure that he will come, because he has only received a down payment whereby I have also ordered a few more boxes that are needed to meet the demand.

In the meantime it is time to find out where the herring is now. Oh, the transporter can tell you that. They are nice and cold in a freezer room at BKK airport. When customs return from their weekend on Monday and I give 20.000 baht for their frozen hotel, they might be able to clear that day so that they can sleep with me on Monday evening. If so, I have a herring breakfast on April 30, which can't ruin my day.

Greetings from Hua Hin, the herring city by the sea in Thailand.

    Hi Pim,

If you eat your fish on April 30th (I hope very much) then I want to see a picture with you "gasping" on it! You know, grabbing fish by the tail, mouth open and gently sliding it in…brrrrr!

But I hope you will use the slogan again… be smart, eat fish from pim!

    Maybe translate into Thai??

    Regards, mia

Also in Pattaya, the Dutch and a single Thai are eagerly waiting for a tasty herring. When can we expect them?

    Pim,
I wish you every success with your herring. If I only read the story of the cutting board, the herring will have to swim to Pattaya by itself.
Someone who likes a new herring will have to be patient.
I doubt whether the herring on the backbone will still be red after a long period of freezing.
Enthusiasts eat the herring without onions. Not old herring.
I'll be one of the first to eat your herring in Pattaya.
If that's good, I'll personally promote you.
By the way, you have earned that, after entering into such an undertaking.
    Cor van Kampen.

Dear people, thank you all very much for the great responses.
I have received a lot of questions, especially from Pattaya.
This has done me a lot of good after the downer that we all know as lovers of a genuine buddy that they are in a cold store in BKK and hopefully arrive with me on Monday evening.
I am talking to Ons Moeder who have been recommended by acquaintances in Pattaya.
I would like to emphasize here that if customs would be kind after they put a damper on many of us by detaining it on April 30th.
I will give Pattaya priority so that these are for sale no later than Thursday.
Around that time, quite a few people in Chiang Mai will also be walking around with a satisfied stomach.
    Sincerely from

There is good news for some people!
The herring has cleared customs and is on its way to Hua hin .
So from King's day is Hua hin

  5. I have already ordered some for myself and will pick them up tomorrow. I'm already looking forward to it!

Finally on May 3 the first herring in Chiang Mai. I must say Pim, they are delicious, but they are gone very quickly. As a result, the second shipment has already arrived here and a Haring Party will be held next Tuesday, May 7. I expect it to be busy:

At Dutch Jan's Sunshine bar upcoming Tuesday (May 7), Soi 2, Moon Muang, starting around 6 pm.
Sold at cost, such a non-commercial event. See it as a bit late tribute to our new (by then 1 week old) king!
    (thanks to Las)

    Where should this go?
The Dutchman usually enjoys his deserved rest when he is 65 .
In my case that doesn't apply if I want to continue enjoying Thailand, a lot has changed in the 10 years I've been here
Which is really not in favor of the people who made the Netherlands great after the war.
In 36 days it will be time, the thick banknotes you would get for it have now become a rolling paper.
To avoid having to go back to the herring country I got the idea to bring the herring here.
This has really been an idea that thousands of people are very happy with as I notice and see the reactions.
Apart from the fact that my chilblains no longer bother me, there is at least one family from the Isaan with a good future.
The old people who had already left NL. are happy that the healthy pharmacy has followed them.

In Hua hin the striker has started followed by Chiang Mai, today Pattaya also enjoyed it according to the latest report and since this afternoon the Okay market in Cha-am has
    also the first.
    All this within 5 days.
For me it is incredibly busy and it is good that I started to feel 20 years younger here.
I am already trembling at the thought when the new one comes ashore in Hua hin on June 5th .

I must hereby say thank you for exceeding expectations thanks to your responses.
Most likely a 2nd Thai family will also start working for you in June so that they can also give their children a good education for their future.
We are putting together a good team so that the herring eater can be recognized by his smile.
We can not make it more fun .

This is great, I'm looking forward to it but… where in Pattaya can I pick it up?

There is no definitive solution for transport yet.
This week someone will come to me privately who, according to the intention, wants to take herring to a customer in Pattaya on Saturday.
This week I expect to come to a good solution with an entrepreneur in Pattaya to ensure that there will always be herring for sale.
If he called today, they could be for sale tomorrow at a fixed address.
Can't wait, maybe Collin could give you a tip who has them at the moment.
Think of it as a childhood disease that we want to get rid of as soon as possible.
Due to the great success within 5 days, the transport is not yet running smoothly.

It's swearing in church, I know, but I don't like herring (I'm being treated for it), but these kind of diaries, I like porridge. To be continued I hope..

I like herring, but I'm really not going to take a trip for it, nor not to the city center of Bangkok. I eat as much Thai as possible for a number of reasons:
    - it's delicious
    – there are many dishes and flavors
    – it fits better with the climate here (don't think of sauerkraut with greasy gravy)
    – you stay slimmer because – if you pay attention – Thai food is much less fat than Dutch food
    – it is cheaper than pizza, macaroni, potatoes with a pork tenderloin (although the latter are very cheap here)
    – it makes you more resistant to the conditions here (spicy food and garlic influences your body sweat and scares away the mosquitoes).
The Thai don't always eat healthy: too much pork (there is a big cholesterol problem in Thailand) and way too much sugar (which is then converted into body fat).
To be honest, I do have breakfast with a brown sandwich with meat fillings, cheese or jam. I can't get rice down my throat in the morning.

  12. I've tasted them! Unfortunately only 2, but they were delicious!
I've been saying for years that there's little I can't get here these days and I therefore miss little or nothing. I always missed my delicious herring, which I ate for lunch around 5 days a week in the Netherlands.

Now I don't have to miss it anymore… Very tasty!

Go taste it quickly if you haven't already!

Go to google and learn something.
The unsaturated fatty acids present in the herring reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
