I was asked this question earlier this week by a young Thai lady with whom I played a game of pool billiards. “Did I already know what?” I asked. “Well, you know, hooked up with someone on Tinder, the dating system on your cell phone.”
I had to confess that I didn't know what Tinder was, in fact I didn't even know that I didn't know, because I'm completely ignorant of all that is possible in the field of smartphones and the like. Call me old fashioned!
So I went home to find out what Tinder is all about. Well, Tinder is a downloadable app for Android and iOS that makes it easy to connect with someone of the opposite sex.
Sign in and create profile
After downloading you log in and create your own profile, which other users can view. You will then see photos of those other users, where you can indicate whether you are interested in that user by means of a cross or a heart. A heart from you is answered with a heart and the contact is made. There is more to tell about it, but look at, for example www.fleurflirt.nl/tinder or Google “Tinder” and you get a wealth of positive, but also negative information about this phenomenon, what some call an ordinary meat inspection.
Tinder in Thailand
Tinder – and competitors have now appeared – is also extremely popular in Thailand, especially among young people. Now I can imagine that if you are a shy type this is a system that appeals for making a first contact. But this is Thailand where contacts are so easy to make that I would think what do you need Tinder for?
It could be to find someone you don't normally meet in the nightlife scene. Or at least not in the same bar or disco where someone is looking for a contact, a date and what can follow.
Finally
Not for me, I am therefore outside the target groups in terms of age. If I would like to have contact with another lady, there are plenty of opportunities in Thailand to get that done.
How about you? Have you already 'tindered' in Thailand and what is your experience?

About this blogger
-
Bert Gringhuis (1945), born and raised in Almelo in the beautiful Twente. Later lived for many years in Amsterdam and Alkmaar, working in export for various companies. I first came to Thailand in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the country. Been back many times since then and moved to Thailand after my (early) retirement as a widower. I have been living there for 22 years now with my somewhat younger Thai lady Poopae.
My first experiences in Thailand as a kind of newsletter sent to family, friends and acquaintances, which later appeared under the name Gringo on Thailandblog. Many, many articles followed those first stories and that has grown into an almost daily hobby.
In the Netherlands still an avid footballer and football referee, but the years are starting to tell and in Thailand still avid, but the pool billiards is really of inferior quality, ha ha!

No, I haven't tinned yet.
Well, I bathed. Badoo is a similar App if I read it that way.
The problem with those cross / heart Apps is that you select almost exclusively on the first impression of the appearance, without having read a profile at all.
The offer is also much too large for that. On Badoo in Thailand you can keep clicking on the cross or heart for hours, there is no end to it. So there is no starting point.
And if there is a match and you read the profile, it is often not what you are looking for.
Messages are more often not answered than they are, I'm afraid the ladies have a huge overload.
I also tried Wechat, which is a lot less pleasant to work with in terms of interface, but it drives you less crazy.
Thailovelinks and the like keep nagging for money and there are relatively many fakers on it.
Personally, I think Thaifriendly.com is a pleasant site for Thailand. Basically free, with the main limitation that you can send a maximum of one message every ten minutes. For something like 15 euros per month you have the full functionality and you cannot put more money into it.
From the profiles you can often easily determine what someone is or is not looking for, the range is very wide and easy to limit by setting all kinds of parameters, including distance. There are many ladyboys in between, but that is a separate category here, which you can enable or disable.
You'll find everything here from freelancers for a short time, to ladies looking exclusively for a lifelong relationship.
As an aside, I note that I got to know the girl from Naklua (how would it be with hasr?) through this site and finally she also mentions that it is not an App, but just a site that you visit, so it can be done at any platform and they only have access to the data that you provide yourself.
Thank you, Frans, for your expert analysis and addition.
I've learned something again, but nevertheless..... I'm not even going to start, ha ha!
When I log in to Tinder / Badoo in Thailand, I score a date within minutes without having to make any effort myself! In the Netherlands the counter is after 5 years of Badoo and having sent hundreds of messages on 3 dates!! But if you create a profile here with a picture of a nice woman on it, the messages will come in automatically! Conclusion Badoo only works for women in the Netherlands. But in Thailand also for men!
