The Road to Mandalay, a tragic love drama, will be released in Dutch cinemas on July 26.
Ambitious, determined Lianqing is one of millions of Burmese fleeing their homeland in search of a better life. One summer evening, with the help of people smugglers, she travels by boat, motorcycle and truck to Bangkok, where friends are waiting for her. She soon finds a job, a house and a lover: the helpful Guo, who accompanied her during the grueling journey across the border with Thailand.
Undocumented, however, their lives are tied to uncertainty: there are no well-paid jobs for illegal immigrants and the risk of being arrested and deported is high. For Lianqing, therefore, not Bangkok, but Taiwan is the dream final destination. And she will do just about anything to make that dream come true.
