The end of a cigar

It was a sad day for me last week, when the manager of “my” cigar store in Alkmaar had to inform me that my favorite cigar is no longer for sale. It is a type of senoritas cigar, which I have enjoyed smoking for many years.

It was the last handmade cigar, which was produced in a small company somewhere in the Veluwe and was only for sale at a select number of Dutch cigar shops.

History

My association with this cigar goes back a long way, dating back to the year 1980, when I went from a rolling tobacco smoker to a cigar smoker. I have already written a story about it, which you can read again at: www.thailandblog.nl/leven-thailand/sigaren-roken. The story dates from several years ago and was repeated by the editors in February 2015.

Then why this cigar?

Well, that's a matter of habit. I once started with this cigar, got used to it and eventually any other cigar is not good enough anymore. Nor have I ever been a sophisticated cigar smoker, smoking a spout crack in the morning, a senoritas in the afternoon, and a ball crack in the evening. A glass of cognac didn't have to be special for me either, although that has of course happened often enough.

I smoked a different brand more than once, especially when I was traveling and didn't bring enough cigars from the Netherlands. It always had to be a cigar of the same size. That often worked, albeit at a hefty price, but I've smoked some pretty good locally made cigars in Indonesia, Philippines, Chile, Argentina, and even the United States.

Short filler

An important aspect when choosing a cigar is the "content". The cigar consists of a wrapper containing a mixture of different types of tobacco. That mixture is of chopped tobacco leaves, mixed in such a way to create a certain taste. The whole is then airy, which contributes to the pleasure of smoking cigars.

The counterpart is the so-called long filler, in which large parts of tobacco leaves are rolled up stiffly lengthwise. It is therefore quite difficult to take a puff of the cigar. Most cigars from Cuba and surrounding countries are constructed that way, so I'm not a real fan of them.

Cigars in Thailand

In Thailand, if I smoke a cigar in public or at the tap of an open beer bar, a woman from some hill tribe will pass by, because she also has cigars for sale from her basket. You don't have to be a connoisseur of cigars to see that it doesn't have the quality of what we call a cigar. It is a blade, at most good enough to make Buddha or the house spirit happy with it.

Health

Smoking in any form, smoking cigars is no exception, whether you inhale the smoke or not, is bad for your health, I am shouted at from all sides. That's what a young man from an Arab country said to me not long ago, while I was enjoying a cigar. I asked him how old he was and the answer was early 30's. Well then, I said, make sure you reach my age without smoking, because I am more than twice your age. The meeting took place in the pool hall, where I regularly visit, where about 2 to 50 people were present at the time. I added to my answer that he should realize that less than half of those present will probably never reach my age. The good man had no answer to that!

Cigar boxes

I have now been offered an alternative to my cigar by my cigar dealer. Also smoked a few, but it will take some time before I get used to it. My stock of “old” cigars must have gone up in smoke first. The disadvantage of the new cigar is that it is packaged in a sturdy cardboard box and no longer in a solid wooden box.

The empty boxes have also caused a furore over the years. I never threw them away, but gave them away for various purposes to anyone who wanted them. Great for storing screws, bolts, nails in your workshop, but I also know people who store photos, playing cards, coins and whatnot in it.

Here in Pattaya, the manicurist/pedicurist uses the boxes for the many types of nail polish, the seamstress puts the spools of thread in them and the boxes are also used in the pool hall to store crayons and small tools.

Finally

The problem of the end of a cigar is therefore solved and anyone who knows me will not see or notice the difference in cigar. The cigar in my mouth is my mark and I hope that I may smoke it for a very long time. The most important thing for my fellow man is to know that cigar smokers are nice people, because a cigar smoker is not a troublemaker!

    Hello Albert,

Very annoying for you that you can no longer get that one taste.
But even worse is that another piece of craft in the Netherlands is disappearing in this way and so many old crafts have already disappeared.

Nostalgia is also lost and that is a pity for everyone.

Thanks for the response, Roel, you are also a loyal cigar courier, who has been taking a few boxes for me for years.

So next time it won't be boxes, but cardboard boxes. If you can use some more empty crates, let me know, I still have plenty!

I stopped after years. Still: Recently I found a box of forgotten cigars in the cupboard. Yet again? Cigarettes? A weak surrogate for a cigar. The stuff from Myanmar? The thicker one: Like smoking cardboard. The popular cigar: Smells like weed. Another disadvantage: In the Isaan there were always people who also wanted to try a cigar. 2 pulls, over the lungs which is not supposed to be of course, pat on the floor, slipper on and rub.

I haven't smoked for 6 years and 326 days now and you see, I don't miss it at all…..

I am glad to be rid of a considerable expense because buying the pipe tobacco and the coronas in Udon Thani was a budgetary affair. Have sinned ONE time in all these years; got a thick Havana from my brother and had to sit down after lighting it because I got dizzy. Weaned! And I'll leave it that way. A glass of wine from time to time is also nice.

So tomorrow 6 years and 327 days…. And so on….

Good story! May you quickly get used to your alternative.

Too bad your "own brand" is no longer available. I see “once only” on the cigar box shown. Are there cigars that you can smoke several times? That would be a hefty loss for the tax authorities!
It's nice (for you) that you can still puff your cigar in the pool hall, here at my snooker club that is long gone. Fortunately, because even though I was a heavy smoker of the well-known Heavy Weduwe from Rotterdam until December 31, 2003 at 22:10 PM, I personally like not having to sit in the smoke of others anymore. However, a good cigar smells a lot better than a cigarette and definitely better than that Widow's "monkey hair". And you know, once a smoker, always a smoker, even if you've been quitting for years.

I stopped myself since 20.10.2016 Reason: my grandchildren did not like the fact that I always reeked of cigars. I now have no appetite at all. Everything becomes normal. Good luck.

We have enough beautiful cigar farmers Gringo in our beautiful Alkmaar, they are really nowhere to be found?
I'd like to take a look for you, come regularly. Now about the piece 😉 I'm a Shag smoker myself, but I never turn down a nice cigar. However, I skip the own brand of most countries in Asia, that is just a bit too much for me.

      Thanks for the offer, Rick!
Egbert Broers is the only business in Alkmaar that sold this cigar, but the cigar
      is simply no longer produced.
As you may have read, I now have a good alternative!

Two options. In IJsselmuiden there is another factory where they sell similar cigars (in bags), a bit on the sharp side. Sligro in NL has a very good house brand. Slightly softer in taste.

    Dear Albert,

I've seen a cigar store somewhere in a kind of open square with outdoor restaurants on 2th road somewhere against Mike's, do they also have the “weekday” varieties and not just expensive Havanas, they are not for every day now… are there others here in pattaya? I've been looking for them for a long time, but apparently they're few and far between here?

And when do you play in megapool during the week, a beer and a cigar seems like something!

Have a nice day and thanks in advance!

    Rudy.

The store is called Cigarista and is indeed located on a square about 150 meters from Mike's Shopping Mall towards Pattaya Klang. In addition to the Cuban cigars, there are also other cigars for sale, look at the range of the Belgian factory J. Cortes, an excellent choice!

For "weekday" cigars, go to the Best supermarket on the corner of Second Road and Pattaya Klang.

Just drop by Megabreak, Rudy, around 9 o'clock in the evening I'm usually there sometimes long sometimes short

    Hello Gringo

I'm curious which cigars are no longer made? is it van der Donk?
I would like to invite you to try a few others in De Cigarenkamer van de Dieu in Alkmaar. Also as a thank you for your beautiful stories on Thailand blog.
I will be back in Alkmaar on April 17.

    Kind regards, Peter Yai

    • Gringo says up

I'll gladly accept the invitation, Peter, but I live in Thailand and it doesn't look like I'll be in Alkmaar anytime soon.

Unfortunately I do not know the name of the manufacturer, on the box is only the name of Egbert Broers.

If you also live in Thailand and are visiting Alkmaar, you can of course bring Egbert Broers cigars for me. Send a message to the editors and I will contact you by e-mail

    Hello Gringo,

Coincidentally this week while cleaning out a kitchen cupboard, I came across a box of “Justus van Maurik” Coronation 25, there are still a few in it, and the box is filled with Elephant Corona Panatella.
As almost 70 years old, I stopped smoking for a number of years.
If you want them, I will send them to you, although I am staying in Thailand, I will not bring them to Pattya, a residence near Thayang, Phetchaburi Province.
My email is known to the editors.
    Yours faithfully,
    Pieter
