Thai cities highlighted (1): Bangkok
In this new series on Thailandblog, we will highlight various cities in Thailand with text and especially images. A selection of defining and iconic photos will give you a good idea of what to expect. Today we start with the capital of Thailand: Bangkok.
Bangkok or Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, the city of the Angels, is a special city in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1782 by King Rama I. This metropolis is home to perhaps 15 million people, although official counts remain at around 8 million. The city is split in half by the Chao Phraya River, which flows into the Gulf of Thailand.
Characteristic of the city are the many canals (Klongs) which have given it the nickname the Venice of the East. Other icons associated with the city are:
- The magnificent temples and palaces.
- The canals and floating markets.
- Shopping walhalla, thanks to the many markets, but also the luxury department stores with top brands.
- A huge gastronomic choice and world famous street food.
- A hot and vibrant nightlife.
There are of course also negative qualifications such as the presence of smog and particulate matter, a daily traffic jam, overcrowding, poverty and noise pollution.
It is mainly the great contrasts that stand out, such as wealth next to poverty and skyscrapers versus dilapidated huts.
