Landmarks of old Pattaya
Pictures of old Pattaya are still hanging in some bars and restaurants. Since that time a lot has changed. Most of the old buildings have disappeared, others are hidden behind large billboards.
It is interesting to take a walk through the Walking Street during the day, a completely different street than the one that can be seen at night with its overwhelming music and illuminated advertisements. And try to recognize the old Pattaya again.
Halfway down the street there is also an old tree, which could tell a lot about the changes and expansions of the city. Surprisingly, some trees are spared. There is a tree in several places in the city, it is not cut down but the road splits around the tree.
This can be seen at the food market with all its bars, but also when driving on the Naklua road towards the fish market. It is definitely worth visiting the fish market and the park behind it with a beautiful view of the sea. If one were to continue on the Naklua road, the neighborhood would become more and more authentic with its wooden houses. It is even possible to cross the bridge and then immediately turn right to follow part of a klong. A real Thai neighborhood where people sometimes stare with surprise at the Farang with a look or who is not lost.
On the way back, it is recommended to turn right at soi 12 on Naklua Road. Continue to the fork, turn right and immediately at the Family store turn right again and keep driving until you reach the jetty. A large number of fishing boats are moored at this jetty, which can be seen on the water at night by the green lights in the distance. At the beginning of the jetty is the Shell Tangkay Seafood restaurant, where fresh sea products can be enjoyed. Needless to say there is a beautiful view over the water with its ships and activity.
Here, too, time has stood still and it is worth a visit. Still a bit of the old original Pattaya.

yes it is very nice to walk there with all those wooden houses, and visit the fish market, and also something to eat, you have to watch out for wet feet, so don't walk with slippers or open shoes. sell everything there, from fish to size toads and an amount of shrimp, to order and then wait for them to be grilled and enjoy. Really go there when you are in pattaya, and don't forget to go to the sanctuary of truth is also in that neighborhood by the sea (AMAZING) I thought enter soi 18 (naklua road) and walk out.
Shell Tangkay… one of our preferred seafood restaurants when we stay in Naklua. During our last visit (May this year) I noticed that after years, the well-thumbed and almost illegible menu cards were finally replaced by brand new trilingual ones. Thai/English/Russian ! Unfortunately, the prices are also brand new and the level has clearly increased. From a quite affordable restaurant (for a consistently high quality) it has become an expensive place in comparison. Again, quality is not compromised; it remains super as far as seafood is concerned. A waitress who we have known there for many years also commented that now that the menu is "finally" available in Russian, the Russians themselves are failing ... something that she is not at all sorry about.
Incidentally, the temple of the Sanctuary of Truth (see response Leny) is also located in Naklua soi 12 ... before Shell Tankay you turn right at the fork, before the temple you just keep following the soi to the left.

Dolf Riks then had his restaurant, with a sheet iron corrugated roof, on Beach road Pattaya. TAT was also there and the bus to Bangkok was parked there. Beach Road was otherwise a quiet street. Also unrecognizable. But ATMs were already there then, free to use. Jontien was an empty stretch of road along the beach with a still existing seafood restaurant at the end.
Yes Theo, for a long time that was the only seafood restaurant (now quite a few) at the end of Jomtien Beach Road. Always many (especially Thai and Chinese) visitors, both for lunch and dinner when the sun goes down. Been there regularly. The road turns left just before the restaurant and after 200 meters you can turn right again where such a notorious and barely visible speed bump is/was. I fell there with my motorbike 2 x, donkey that I am. Shell Tangkay in Naklua is of course also a household name. Always found it to be reasonably priced.
Looks like fun to do, thanks for the tip
