Three-headed elephant statues in central Bangkok near the Royal Palace

Rattanakosin is the old town of Bangkok. King Rama I had his capital built here in 1782. This area is also home to Bangkok's main attractions, such as the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phrakeaw). The neighborhood borders the Chao Phraya River to the west.

If you have ever walked through the old city of Bangkok, Rattanakosin, you will know that this part of the city is steeped in history and culture. It is a place where you can really feel the essence of Thailand. This place is not only the heart of Bangkok, but also of the Thai monarchy and Buddhism.

The majestic Grand Palace, the former royal palace, is one of the most impressive sights in Rattanakosin. But perhaps even more fascinating is the Wat phra kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This sacred image of the Buddha, carved from a single block of jade, attracts millions of visitors each year. Even after all these years of living here, the serene atmosphere of this temple never fails to move me.

What makes this neighborhood special are not only the grand monuments, but also the hidden gems. Lose yourself in the small alleys, where wooden houses stand that bear witness to times gone by. Time seems to have stood still here. The local population lives at a pace that forms a stark contrast to the bustling Bangkok beyond these borders. You will see shops here selling handmade products, from traditional Thai silk to antiques.

Tips for your visit to Rattanakosin:

  • Start early: Bangkok can get quite hot during the day. It is wise to start early, especially if you want to visit the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew before the big crowds arrive.
  • Dress appropriately: In temples, such as Wat Phra Kaew, appropriate dress is required. Make sure your shoulders are covered and that you do not wear shorts.
  • Explore on foot: All the main sights in the old town are within walking distance of each other. Grab a comfortable pair of shoes and stroll through the alleys and past the traditional wooden houses.
  • Take the ferry across the Chao Phraya: This is a fun and inexpensive way to see Rattanakosin from the water. The ferries are an essential part of daily life in Bangkok, and the views of the old city skyline are beautiful from the river.

The charm of Rattanakosin is that it preserves the soul of Bangkok. It is a place where the past and present come together in a unique way. Whether you are interested in history, religion, or just want to experience the local culture, this part of the city will not disappoint you.

The old town also has nice alleys and neighborhoods with wooden houses where time seems to have stood still. Almost all sights are within walking distance of each other.

By boat

The best way to get there is by boat. The best way is to take the Chao Phraya River Express boat, which departs from the BTS Saphan Taksinop skytrain station. The main pier is Tha Tien, from where you can walk to Wat Pho or the Grand Palace, or you can take the ferry to Wat Arun. Alternatively, you could consider the Saen Saep boat. This takes you to the western terminus at the Golden Mount (Wat Saket), from where it is a good walk to the aforementioned temples and palaces.
