We bought our house over three years ago. The house was about five years old at the time. So now more than eight years. Time to renovate and update some things. The two bathrooms in particular could use a facelift. The fencing around the garden also needs to be replaced due to rust formation.

After my third involuntary fall with my Honda PCX, about 4 months ago, my wife decided that we should get a car after all. The Honda was sold, my wife had a few savings and with that money we bought a nice (old) Toyota Corolla from her brother-in-law, who has a car garage in Bangkok.

Many here are poor in money, but rich in land. Agricultural land that is, and therefore worth little, although they often build on it, especially if that piece of land is close to a is. Black street or track, that's what they call an asphalt road here. Land that is often also unsaleable, the must remain in the same name, which may only be passed on in the first-line family.

In the context of the 'Riviera Project', which aims to expand Thai tourism more to the South, quite a few new initiatives are being taken here in my region, Chumphon – Pathiu. Along the coast, Hat Bo Mao, Hat Bangson ... new resorts are being built in abundance, although several resorts already exist and in fact have a very low occupancy rate.

Piak, brother of the sweetheart, is a bit of a problem in the family. In a number of blogs (“an Isaan life”), the Inquisitor described the man's day-to-day concerns to survive as an unskilled farmer in Isaan. In that period there was hope that Piak could work his way out of the circle of poverty a little bit. But two years later, little has changed.

The Inquisitor can say that he is well integrated in this Isan village in the middle of the Udon Thani/Sakon Nakhon/Nongkai triangle. Everyone knows him by name, they greet him spontaneously, like to have a chat, although it takes longer than usual because of the language barrier, which is mainly The Inquisitor's fault.

It's quiet again. I found the peace by chance, my wife's house was just here. The yard where the houses stand is a bit outside the village, there are no cars or mopeds, except our own.

Yesterday I fell asleep with ringing in my ears and the (necessary) drink, but when I got up I heard music again. How is that possible?

When I set foot on Thai soil again and enjoy the peace in front of the house, I normally only hear the birds. Now I also hear my neighbor's machine a few hundred meters away, which is processing rice.

So back again for a while. The trip to Thailand started some time ago with the purchase of a plane ticket. My preference is EVA Air. I'm lucky enough to get a good night's sleep almost anywhere, and woke up for breakfast after my eight hours of sleep. Still a few hours to go.

I like to write about memories from long ago… about Varsseveld, but this time also about Thailand. My first visit to Thailand dates back to almost 20 years ago. The region where we come is the Isaan .. I call it the Achterhoek of Thailand.

There are those days when everything falls into place. As always, De Inquisitor wakes up early and the first thing you notice is that the temperature is much more pleasant in the morning. The chill is gone. Twenty-four degrees while the sun has yet to rise. Then you sit very comfortably on your outdoor terrace with a cup of coffee on the laptop to satisfy your curiosity about world events. And this morning there are two things that make it even more enjoyable.

Life in Thailand is getting more and more expensive, especially compared to Malaysia and Indonesia. This has made Thailand less attractive, not only for tourists but also for expats and pensioners who want to settle in the Land of Smiles.

Fortunately, Charly's life is full of pleasant surprises (unfortunately sometimes also less pleasant ones). Until a few years ago, he would never have dared to predict that he would spend the rest of his life in Thailand. However, he has now been living in Thailand for a while and in recent years close to Udonthani. This time an impression of the high season in Udon and a small update of soi sampan.

The Inquisitor is not someone who is quick to pass on less pleasant experiences. However, sometimes unpleasant things happen in his life. For example, hospitalization was necessary about three and a half years ago, described in an earlier blog (“The Inquisitor and lungplujabaan”).

It is sometimes said that the people here have to catch up because of the technological developments in the world. That there is also an urgent need for a change of mentality such as their approach to modern problems such as traffic, the environment and others. Because we Westerners have been involved in this from the start of these developments, we were given several generations of time. Here they have to do it in a single lifetime.
