Massage parlors in Udon Thani
After my more serious postings about opening a euro bank account and Thai taxes, this time a posting about a subject that is a bit taboo, especially in Thailand, but still often in the Netherlands as well. And if it does come up for discussion, then usually in a somewhat muffled and giggly atmosphere. Prostitution.
A nice border run (1)
Last week one of my friends was forced to do a border run. Although he used to stay here on an annual extension, it was now temporarily impossible for him to meet the financial requirements as an unmarried pensioner. So, with a Non O Multiple Entries, obtained at the Thai Embassy in The Hague, every 90 days, you are required to leave the country to obtain a new 90-day residence period.
Landed on a Tropical Island: Murder and Manslaughter on Koh Phangan
Here on Koh Phangan we are in the rainy season, but it is rather dry so far. But when it rains, all kinds of things happen. The rain triggers a migration of small and less small creeping stuff. The first photos of snakes, hidden in kitchen cupboards or in the bedroom, have already been posted on Facebook.
Lung addie: to the technical mobile inspection
Every year my good 'Old Lady Steed' has to go to the inspection center for a technical check-up. My Old Lady Steed is a Honda 600cc VLX shopper that has served Lung Addie for years and continues to do so.
Charly and opening a euro bank account
Fortunately, Charly's life is full of pleasant surprises (unfortunately sometimes also less pleasant ones). For several years he has been living in a resort not far from Udonthani. In his stories, Charly mainly tries to raise awareness of Udon, but he also discusses other things in Thailand.
The cold season in Thailand
The cold season has clearly set in in Thailand. Temperatures drop to six degrees or lower, especially in the north of Thailand.
Landed on a tropical island: Het Demerklokje on Koh Phangan
Many beautiful people live on the island, one of them is Jimmy, a friend of mine. We regularly drink coffee at the big table at Bubba's. Today we are talking about our childhood.
Copperhead(ed) Racer (Coelognathus radiatus) in the garden
It was a surprise to see a snake pass on the terrace on my quiet Sunday morning of December 1st. The snake is also called the Radiated Racer Snake or in Thai ngu thang maphrao งูทางมะพร้าว. First take a picture to search the internet for which snake it was. This animal turned out to possess a few very nice qualities.
In a small station…..
Yes, it starts as the well-known children's song in Flanders: in a small station neken, early in the morning, 7 little cars stood in a row………
Winter in Isan (8)
The short tropical twilight that lasts barely half an hour before darkness sets in gives just enough view of the rice fields that are starting to dry out. Nowhere does water shine through and where people have not yet harvested the culms hang heavily, in some places they have even been blown flat by the wind that regularly blows this time of year.
Charly in Udon (10): Just relaxing
Fortunately, Charly's life is full of pleasant surprises (unfortunately sometimes also less pleasant ones). For several years he has been living in a resort not far from Udonthani. In his stories, Charly mainly tries to raise awareness of Udon, but he also discusses other things in Thailand.
Come on Cees, it's only temporary...
'Come on, Kees, it's only temporary, it will pass….' Leen Jongewaard once sang. It must have something to do with my nickname (even if it is with a C, but you don't hear that difference anyway) that this text from Annie MG Schmidt has been in my mind for a few days now.
What about your acidification?
The verb 'to sour' has a negative connotation in my ears; I can't easily imagine a positive meaning either. Literally it means 'turning sour', and it sounds like that is something undesirable, that it leads to something that is no longer useful. The saying 'what's in the barrel doesn't sour' expresses this well.
Charly in Udon (9): Thai taxes
Fortunately, Charly's life is full of pleasant surprises (unfortunately sometimes also less pleasant ones). For several years he has been living in a resort not far from Udonthani. In his stories, Charly mainly tries to raise awareness of Udon, but he also discusses other things in Thailand.
Abnormal traffic behavior in Thailand
Everyone has his or her experiences with traffic in Thailand, enough has been written about that. But how to behave when an ambulance or police car is overtaking with sound and light signals, has apparently not been learned. In the Netherlands, Germany and other countries there are clear guidelines that must be adhered to.
Winter in Isan (7)
While there is still a lot of rai rice to be harvested, a number of families are already ready for other work. There is not really much work, not a single construction site in the area and hardly even day laborers when harvesting, machines are now fully introduced because the price, five hundred baht per rai, is cheaper than the roughly thousand baht that three day laborers would receive for the same chore. Modern means clearly do not provide for this anymore ...
