Agenda: Thailand festivals and events in July 2024
The month of July marks two of the most important events in the Buddhist calendar. It is Asanha Bucha Day, which commemorates the day Buddha gave his first sermon more than 2500 years ago, and Khao Phansa, or Buddhist Fast Day, when candles are offered to monks at the start of the three-month Buddhist fast. Although these candle celebrations can be seen in different parts of Thailand, the main one in Ubon Ratchathani province always promises excitement and amazement.
In addition to these important religious celebrations, numerous other events and festivals take place this month. Below is an overview of some highlights:
- Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2024: From July 17 to 23 at Thung Sri Mueang in Ubon Ratchathani Province. This festival is known for its impressive candle parade and artistic creations.
- Amazing Food Festival 2024: From July 20 to 22 in Chiang Mai. This event offers a culinary journey of discovery with local and international dishes.

What about the store openings during Asahna Bucha? I know government offices are closed sometimes, but aren't stores and markets open? And there's something about alcohol sales, right?
