On Tuesday, August 15, the annual commemoration meeting will take place in Kanchanaburi in memory of the end of the Second World War in Asia.

Special attention is paid to the Dutch victims of the construction of the Burma Railway. Nearly 3000 Dutch people lost their lives. Many of the Dutch victims found their final resting place at the Don Rak and Chungkai Honorary Cemeteries in Kanchanaburi.

If there is sufficient interest, the NTCC and NVT Bangkok will provide joint transport (NTCC) from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and back, and a joint lunch (NVT Bangkok). When using shared transport, a personal contribution will be required from the participants and participation in the lunch will be at the participants' own expense.

You can register for participation at the embassy up to and including Monday 31 July via the following e-mail address: [email protected].

Please state when registering whether you want to use shared transport and a shared lunch.

You can consult the detailed program of the meeting on the website of the embassy via the following link: www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl

Thais display a curious insensitivity or ignorance about their and our wartime past.
A German who paraded in SS uniform on one of our markets would be quickly punished for it.
Not so with a Japanese who I recently saw proudly parade in war dress with a samurai sword at the Sunday market in Chiangmai and I have seen him do so in other years without provoking any protest.
I also remember the international protests against a Hitlerian parade in annual celebration of the prestigious 'Sacré Coeur' school in Chiangmai, complete with students dressed in Nazi uniforms, with Hitler mustaches walking in goose stride with swastika flags, cheered by the school community including the teaching corps.
After many protests, including from the Israeli embassy, the school and the headquarters of “Sacré Coeur” in Los Angeles have apologized.
