The annual 'Vegetarian Festival' will be held in Phuket from September 23 to October 2, 2014. This nine-day festival is world famous for its bizarre ceremonies.

Besides a nine-day diet without meat, things are pretty painful in Phuket. During the procession, followers of the Chinese Bang Neow Shrine have themselves pierced with knives, pistols and swords and pierce needles through their skin or perform other painful actions.

This they do to purify themselves and thus bear the sins of the community.

It produces bizarre photos.
