Wat Tham Sua in Kanchanaburi

Wat Tham Sua in Kanchanaburi

In Thailand you have temples and special temples, the Wat Tham Sua in Kanchanaburi belongs to the latter category. The temple is especially popular for its fantastic view of the mountains and rice fields.

You will find the Wat Tham Sua about 16 kilometers from the center of Kanchanaburi. The complex consists of several temples, all located on a raised plateau, hence the special views. You can walk around there for a few hours, there is plenty to see.

  • Location: Located on a hill, Wat Tham Sua offers panoramic views of the surrounding rice fields and the Mae Klong River. The landscape surrounding the temple is simply breathtaking, especially during the green season when the rice fields are in full bloom.
  • Architecture: The temple has an impressive design with large golden Buddha statues. The large white pagoda (chedi) can be seen from a distance and contains a relic of Buddha.
  • The climb: One of the notable features of Wat Tham Sua is the steep staircase that leads visitors to the top of the hill. Although it can be a challenging climb, the panoramic views from the top are totally worth it.
  • Buddha statue: There is a gigantic golden Buddha statue known as “Luang Pho Yai”. This statue is a popular prayer and meditation point for locals and tourists alike.
  • Historical significance: According to local folklore, the name 'Tiger Cave Temple' is derived from the fact that in the past tigers hid in the caves surrounding the temple.
  • Day trips: Due to its proximity to Kanchanaburi City, Wat Tham Sua is a popular day trip destination. Kanchanaburi is also known for other historical and natural attractions such as the Erawan Waterfall and the Death Railway.
  • Surrounding nature: Outside of the temple itself, the surrounding caves and cave temples are also worth exploring. They contain various Buddha statues and relics.

If you ever get the chance to visit Kanchanaburi, Wat Tham Sua is definitely a place you won't want to miss. It offers both spiritual and natural beauty unique to this part of Thailand.

Kanchanaburi is a city in Central Thailand 130 km from Bangkok. The province has much more to offer, such as the Erawan National Park and the bridge over the River Kwai. South of Kanchanaburi you will find several beautiful temples located close to each other. The Wat Ban Tham is well worth a visit. But if you want to enjoy the view, the Wat Tham Sua is still more beautiful.

The large golden Buddha that seems to watch over the city is certainly impressive.

  • Can be visited from Monday – Sunday: 08:00 – 18:00

I can only agree with this. We have been there for a year or two and it is a very beautiful temple. With regard to the multiple temples, I would like to add that I understand that the temple with the Buddha is a Thai temple and the other high agoda is a Chinese temple, from where you have that beautiful view. And then there is a small cave at the foot of the Chinese temple… nice and cool.

Kanchanaburi is really worth a visit of several days.. 🙂

Yes indeed Kanchanaburi is definitely for several days.
Do you like elephants, there is also a hands off sanctuary for elephants recently.
In a few months they will also have an interactive museum about elephants.
      Somboon Legacy…. ..keep following it.

วัดถ้ำเสือ Wat Tham Sua (high, falling, rising tone) Wat in natural 'temple', tham is 'cave' and sua means 'tiger' The Temple of the Tiger Cave.

The more temples, the fewer tigers.

In yesterday's Thailand Blog (October 1, 2023) there is a photo of the top of the Tiger Cave in Krabi. An imposing complex, which is definitely worth more photos.

    A beautiful view indeed.
Not far from there (3km) also worth a visit
Cristal cave, caves and a great view.
But there will be another in the near future
    a few special sights too
    admire his,in kanchanaburi.
Not far from the new skywalk they are building a chedi
    building 35 meters high.
And the icing on the cake is that they are located approximately 15 km from the center
    Bhudha building 165 meters!! high.
    And 108 meters wide.
It will therefore become the third highest statue in the world.
I think people will come and see that.
    Kind Regards Fofie.
