Wat Arun on the banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River is a fascinating icon in the Thai capital. The view over the river from the highest point of the temple is breathtaking. Wat Arun has a charm of its own that sets it apart from other attractions in the city. It is therefore a fantastic historical place to visit.

Also known as the "Temple of Dawn", Wat Arun is the only temple in Bangkok located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. The Prang (Khmer style tower) is no less than 67 meters high. It is especially the decorations with sea shells, porcelain and Chinese materials that stand out.

The Wat Arun is one of the most iconic landmarks in Bangkok, Thailand. This temple stands out from other temples in the city with its unique design and location along the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, which adds to its scenic beauty, especially during sunrise and sunset.

What is less known about Wat Arun is the rich history and symbolism behind its architecture. The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period and has undergone several changes and renovations over the centuries. The temple's most striking feature, the central prang (tower), is richly decorated with colorful porcelain shards and pieces of ceramics, which once served as ballast on boats coming to Bangkok. These materials were reused to give the prang a striking and colorful appearance.

The architecture of Wat Arun is not only beautiful, but also has deep spiritual significance. The central prang is seen as a representation of Mount Meru, which is considered the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. The surrounding four smaller prangs symbolize the four cardinal points.

The location of Wat Arun, opposite the Royal Palace on the other side of the river, was strategically chosen. It symbolized the protection of the city and the royal family. This placement along the river not only provides a beautiful view, but also had a practical reason. The river played a crucial role in trade and transportation during the time the temple was built.

What is special about Wat Arun is that it is one of the few temples in Bangkok where visitors can climb the prang. The steep steps lead to a platform that offers breathtaking views over the river and the city. This physical experience of climbing, together with the panoramic views, makes a visit to Wat Arun a memorable experience.

There are two ways to reach the temple, by land along Arun Amarin Road or by boat via ferry from Tha Tien Pier and Chao Phraya Express Boat from other piers in Bangkok.

The steps of the iconic tower are quite steep, but you will be rewarded with a beautiful view and you can take special photos.
