Myanmar, formerly Burma

One of the most sensitive subjects among travelers in Southeast Asia was whether or not they can visit Burma (Myanmar).

It still is, but in recent months we have seen so many positive changes in Burma that we have to ask ourselves whether we should change our opinion.

What has changed?

That is more in a short time than was ever thought possible. Of course, a lot more needs to change before all traces of the past are erased.

A short summary of the changes of the past year and now:

  • Last year, the figurehead of the freedom struggle and opposition in Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, was released from her years of house arrest.
  • Photos and images on T-shirts of “The Lady” and her slain father, freedom fighter Aung San, are now seen all over the country.
  • Aung San Suu Kyi has been able to conduct a very successful election tour of the country for the elections of a number of seats in parliament. She herself won a seat and her party, the NLD, as it stands today, two days after the election, seized at least 43 of the 45 seats available in this election.
  • The nonsensical official exchange rate of the Kyat is being abandoned and now more closely matches its true value.
  • “The Lady” has withdrawn her call not to come to Myanmar and invites tourists and investors to visit the country and invest sustainably.
  • The independent press is also flourishing and magazines are openly appearing that are not compiled and controlled by the military.
  • Hundreds of political prisoners have been released since last year, but there are still political prisoners. And so there are new things to report almost every day that indicate that there are really major changes in politics.
  • This also clearly has repercussions on the daily life of the population. Poverty is still high, but the hope for freedom and a better future is tangible and expressed everywhere.

Now is the time to go to Myanmar, see the changes for yourself and travel through this beautiful country with its unique art treasures, beautiful nature and special people.
