Selling a car in Thailand

Often only written about the purchase of a car. But there will come a time when the car will be sold. This happens, for example, by leaving for the home country or by no longer being able to drive a car. When trading in a car, this is arranged at a good dealer.

Selling is a fairly simple process, requiring a certificate of residence, which can be obtained from the nearest immigration office. Without this document it is very difficult to sell the car. For this reason, when leaving Thailand, the car cannot be sold by someone else. Even if for whatever reason someone cannot return to Thailand, the car remains unsaleable.

The seller signs a transfer document and provides a copy of the ID card or passport and house registration. However, the transfer document must be drawn up in Thai. This can be done by a Thai or by a translation agency.

Payment must be made in cash! It cannot be the case that you are asked at the last minute whether it can be paid in two installments. Or they go to the bank together to make sure the sale is done correctly there! No bad checks or wrong transfers because the buyer, usually farang, doesn't understand it very well yet and then still gets on the boat!

We have been busy trading in our pick-up Mitsubishi Triton. At Ford, Toyota, Isuzi, Chevrolet, and even at Mitsubishi itself, they had no trade-in option. While we wanted to buy a much more expensive SUV. They did know buyers who might be interested. But those buyers offered so ridiculously little that we didn't take them up. The SUV will come, so we'll just keep the pick-up.

A two hands on 1 belly policy.
Trying to buy a car cheaply through the back door.

Sometimes age or a less lenient model plays a role!

Is the last sentence referring to “seller” instead of “buyer”?
