Bioluminescent plankton in Khok Kham (Samut Sakhon)

Recently, the media in the Netherlands reported that on some evenings a fascinating natural phenomenon can be seen by the sea. In some places along the coast, the water shows a glowing “light”.

This phenomenon also occurs in a number of places in Thailand. This can be observed at the Bang Saen Beach in every rainy season in the period from June to July. During the day there is nothing special to discover, but at night, when disturbed, the plankton is activated as a kind of defense mechanism against predators. Especially in places where the seawater with plankton collides with docks and seawalls. Then a chemical reaction starts, which causes the light phenomenon.

This phenomenon also occurs on other coasts in Thailand. The entire Krabi area is known for it, especially Ton Sai Beach and Maya Bay. Here again, the period between November and May is spoken of as the best time of the year to see “glowing” plankton around the new moon phase. Various excursions are even organized, such as snorkeling. It creates an optical illusion of a fantasy world of Avatar and is the most impressive sea swimming experience one has ever had.

Elsewhere in the world there are also impressive places such as the Maldives, Hong Kong and others.
