Six men were sentenced to death in Thailand on Wednesday for the massacre of a Thai village chief and seven members of his family, including three children, after a land dispute.

Armed and masked men stormed the local leader's compound on July 2017, causing widespread commotion in the southern province of Krabi. They held his family hostage with handcuffs and blindfolds. They held the family for several hours while they waited for village chief Worayuth Sanlang to return. Then they shot him and his seven relatives in the head. Three others were injured, including a woman who faked her death after a bullet passed through her ear.

The court said the massacre was prompted by a land dispute between the village chief and the lead gunman, Surikfat Bannopwongsakul. The six suspects used handguns to shoot all eight victims, including both women and girls aged four, eight, and XNUMX, according to the verdict read out Wednesday at Krabi Provincial Court.

Thailand still has the death penalty. After nine years of non-compliance, 2018-year-old Theerasak Longji was killed by an injection in June 26, which replaced the firing squad in 2003. It was the seventh time that the death penalty in Thailand was carried out by injection.

Gun homicides are common in Thailand as handguns are widely available. Murders are often motivated by revenge, “losing face” and business disputes. While petty arguments and disputes sometimes turn deadly, mass killings like in Krabi are rare.

A survivor of the massacre and a relative of the victims, Anchalee Booterb, said: “Yes, I am satisfied with this verdict, but even if they are executed, it will not bring my relatives back.”

I hope they carry out the sentence quickly, I am against a death sentence in principle but in this case I don't think there is anyone who thinks this is not justified. Just shooting kids because you have a business conflict with someone, downright disgusting.

I am against the death penalty in principle, but I must admit that there are cruel scum that I hope either have a painful (natural) death or languish in a cell for a long time (life is the worst punishment for a human being). Assuming that the justice system has worked flawlessly, I fear that these perpetrators will see a quick death when their sentences are carried out. The death penalty, no, don't do it. There is a good chance that Thailand does not do that, or the authorities really have to travel back in time with their policy. I hope that the one, exceptional, recent execution is not the start of a trend.

    Death penalty?? NO
Let them think about what they have done for the rest of their lives (I wish you a very long life) and of course not in comfortable cells. Let those guys do forced labor so they can earn something back from what they cost the community. There's no point in killing adults, but children?? And for a few grab-worthy pennies. NO, this can never be justified, no matter how angry they were.
