Mega break Pattaya

In April of this year I wrote an article about pool billiards Thailand and in particular about the ins and outs in the Megabreak pool hall in Soi Diana (Pattaya).

I also told about the different tournaments that we organize there every week. Three general tournaments 9- and 10-ball, in which both regular guests and tourists participate. The participation is international, because the players come from 10 to 15 countries.

Then there is another tournament on Tuesday and it is especially for ladies, hence the name Ladies Night. Every week 20 to 30 girls compete for cash prizes in a 9-ball tournament with a handicap system. The latter means that, depending on her skill, a player must win more or fewer frames to successfully complete a game.

It is perhaps the nicest evening of the week in Megabreak, because the ladies consider Tuesday evening as their evening. The core of the players is quite large and during the tournament the latest news and gossip are exchanged while enjoying a drink. A cheerful bunch, just having fun together and not the usual “How are you? What's your name? Where did you come from? Drinking is fun, but in moderation, no one is ever really drunk. The ladies who are outside with their Thai food cart also do good business on Tuesdays.

So no men around for a while, or is it? The only one who is “accepted” on this evening is me, because I organize that tournament and am therefore the competition leader. I've known most of the ladies for a few years and I know more than average about many of them. Not that they all pour their hearts out to me, but they do consider me "daddy". Let's just say, I'm the good guy, hearing the disability protests, scheduling the matches, and listening to the sometimes intimate details of their relationship with men.

Almost all ladies work or have worked in the hospitality industry, so nothing special for Pattaya. However, the vast majority now have a Farang friend who either lives permanently in Pattaya or who regularly stays in Thailand. I'm not going to list them all, but to get an impression a few details:

Sa is currently the best player. Does not come from the hospitality industry, but has a hair salon, financed by her English boyfriend, with whom she has been living for years.

Fon closely follows her qualitatively. Pretty and spontaneous girl, who no longer works as a bargirl since she has an American boyfriend. When he is not in Thailand, he works in Iraq and they have daily contact via webcam. A nice couple!

Male is an ex A gogo girl, who has an older Canadian as a friend. She started that relationship very young and in the meantime she has come to the realization that a younger friend is better for her. I see her now and then with an Australian boyfriend. She also belongs to the top of the group in terms of playing.

Tukta, also an ex A gogo girl, is at the top of the middle bracket, sexy lady with an Israeli boyfriend. Incomprehensible to many, because he is also a pool player, who always looks gruff and always bleats, while Tukta is all cheerfulness.

jit is a freelancer, who can't always come because of “her work”, but also a pretty good player and always in sexy clothes. If she has a boyfriend for a few weeks, she will also take him to the pool hall.

Apple , also a good player, has a lady as a partner, but despite her lesbian orientation still works in an A gogo.

Nest, middle class, is married to an Englishman, a used Mercedes salesman. He regularly comes to Thailand and waits for the time when he has sufficient means to settle permanently in Thailand.

June, very mediocre player, but enthusiastic. She is the ugly duckling in the group, working as a security agent, because a place in the hospitality industry is definitely not for her.

On Tuesday evening, all the ladies treat each other as friends, while - with one exception - they no longer see each other for the rest of the week. The level of pool playing is high, some ladies also play in the general competitions and are not without a chance. The tournament is of course there to win, but loss is also accepted effortlessly. The losers also often “hang around” and play (of course for money) some games among themselves.

The tournament starts at 9 o'clock in the evening and often ends around 3 o'clock in the morning and sometimes even later. No point for the ladies. I also enjoy myself every Tuesday evening with my cigar and all those drinks that I get pushed. All in all a well spent day!

I first came to Thailand in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the country. Been back many times since then and moved to Thailand after my (early) retirement as a widower. I have been living there for 22 years now with my somewhat younger Thai lady Poopae.
My first experiences in Thailand as a kind of newsletter sent to family, friends and acquaintances, which later appeared under the name Gringo on Thailandblog. Many, many articles followed those first stories and that has grown into an almost daily hobby.
In the Netherlands still an avid footballer and football referee, but the years are starting to tell and in Thailand still avid, but the pool billiards is really of inferior quality, ha ha!

Why is it that there are only snooker/pool tables in Thailand, and no billard table anywhere, so without the pockets ????

Maybe because it's too hard? Or too boring. They don't know it from TV either, so yes to snooker / pool

  2. @ I do notice how fanatical the ladies are. Even if it's just a game of fun in a random bar. The will to win is always there.

Snooker and pool, especially snooker, has been very popular in Thailand since the 90s, partly due to the success of James Wattana (Thai snooker player) in England. Regular billiards (three cushion) is less popular. And furthermore, the American influence of yesteryear is still clearly recognizable in Pattaya, including the gogo/beer bars with pool tables, etc.
