The TAT Newsroom – part of Tourist Authority of Thailand – has published a number of short video documentaries under the overall title “The Seasons”. Below is episode 6 of this series, which is about the 1000-Spire Pagoda on the island Koh Khao Yai, in Ban Bo Chet Luk, which is part of the province's Koh Phetra National Park Satun.

The accompanying text reads: Tourists visiting this island will be greeted by a mass of nearly a thousand bizarre-looking spire-like rocks. This spectacular site is like a bridge connecting us to the pre-human evolutionary era. During low tide in summer, when seawater drains away beneath the sandy ground, gigantic tunnel-like cavities are revealed. To the locals, this mass of rocks is known as “The 1,000-Spire Pagoda”.

The presence of reddish Cambrian sedimentary rocks and gray Ordovician limestone has convinced geologists that this area may have been Thailand's first landmass. Thanks to this unique feature, Koh Khao Yai became Thailand's first geological site to be declared a UNESCO World Geological Site.

Koh Khao Yai tourism is community managed. Local residents proposed ideas, implemented them and designed tourism programs in line with their original way of life. Today, the "1.000-Spire Pagoda" is one of Thailand's best-preserved natural attractions. An ideal site for studies in geology, natural history and cultural anthropology, Ko Khao Yai is well-preserved evidence of suboceanic conditions from 500 million years ago.
