As the name suggests, the event is held once a month at full moon on Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan (Surat Thani). It is one of the world's largest beach parties. Previously, between 10.000 and 30.000 young people attended.
Haad Rin has been without its main attraction for almost two years, and the local economy has been hit hard. The return of the Full moon Party on April 16, which coincides with the five-day Songkran festival, has been in the works for over a year now, stretching over five days from Wednesday. About 10.000 foreign tourists are expected to join the celebration from hotels and other accommodations on Haad Rin. Another 5.000 may arrive from elsewhere on the island.
Booster of the economic engine
The Full Moon Party has been a major driving force for Koh Phangan's tourism-dependent local economy. Visitors came from no less than 15 countries to experience the world-famous party. Tourist cash flow comes from spending on airline tickets, ferries, accommodation, meals, guides and vendors, among other things. It keeps the full cycle of the local economy going.
